Building the Forge

The centre of the forge is a fire-bowl, cast iron and weighs 32kg. Plans to bring it back from the USA on a recent trip were quickly changed when I investigated the over-weight charges for airline baggage!

Federal Express cost a little less and relieved me of the lugging around airports; it arrived two days after we returned.

Under careful supervision various steel supplies were laid out and measured.

Cutting and grinding sat the bowl neatly in the table surface.

Rails are positioned to provide a flush fit on top whilst providing support for the 32 kilos.

Then some simple fabrication for the stand.

Added the chimney and tyure and with a great sense of satisfaction moved the forge into place.

An old fence post provided the block for the anvil and it now looks ready for action. The last piece is the blower which should arrive this week.

With some tricky sheet metal work and a bit of cold forming the blower was connected to the tyure and and air-gate manufactured and installed.
Having collected enough charcoal from the wood stove inside, it was time to switch on the blower and light up the forge - fingers crossed.

Success, the blower and air-gate work perfectly to give anything from a gently burning fire to a roaring furnace.

I thought the chimney opening might be a bit tall, but it draws well, I'll just have to put a spark arrestor on the top before summer.

Now to buy some serious quantities of charcoal and start work.

Jindery Forge is ready to go.
